The Mancunian side are currently in third in the division, two points ahead of in form Arsenal in fifth. This is after they spent a monumental £150 million on new players in the summer.
It is likely that they will spend a similar amount in the next transfer window, but still be off the pace compared to Chelsea and Manchester City.
“When you see the score of the last 15-20 matches, we are the best in the Premier League,” the 63-year-old said.
“I receive credit from the players and that’s the highest credit I can get. From the first day I arrived here I had the feeling that the players would believe. That first game against Swansea was a shock. That match was a big influence. We lost too many points, we could not score goals.
“But now so much is different and I believe that every player knows the philosophy of me and my staff. Everyone wants to follow that philosophy and you can see now that the team spirit is unbelievable.”
United next play Swansea City on Saturday. The Welsh side beat them on the opening day of the season, giving van Gaal an inauspicious start in the Old Trafford hot seat.
The Red Devils will be looking for revenge in the fixture, as well as knowing that it is likely they will need to win to stay in the top four for another week.
