Pumas are currently in 15th position with five points, with only Leones Negros, Monterrey, and Morelia behind them. Worryingly for their fans, they also have the second-worst defensive record, having shipped 12 goals in six games.
Luis Fuentes, Pumas’ defender, is one of the players in a confident mood and has been outspoken in recent weeks.
He recently claimed that the media always present Pumas as the ‘victim’ and America is always made the favourite, adding that in games like this one, the position in the table doesn’t matter at all and anyone can win.
“[The table] has nothing to do with the result, these games are different and played as such. Regardless of who is in first place in the table or who is in last, this is a different game that is played with a different level of intensity,” said the defender during a press conference.
“We have the passion to win, the intensity, the commitment and especially the ability to do so. We only need to put all that into practice to start earning points and be the competitive team we know we can be.”
Last season, Pumas won 1-0 in the regular season but in the quarter finals of the post-season they lost to their opponents on away goals after a 1-1 draw.
