The Merseyside club play against Besiktas in the first leg of their last 32 tie on Thursday evening. They will be going up against Demba Ba for the first time since he scored for Chelsea to bring an abrupt end to their title challenge at the end of last season.
The Reds have a good chance of avenging the Cameroonian’s goal, having picked up their form in recent weeks. This has coincided with the return of Daniel Sturridge from injury.
“We’d been waiting for so many years to get into the Champions League so we were desperate to stay in it,” Lambert said.”But we weren’t playing well when the Champions League was there. If we’d just managed to sneak through, who knows what we would have been able to do now.
“Like I knew we were going to, we’re playing at our best again now. We’re in the Europa League and it’s something that we’ll be trying to win. You come into it at a good stage. I know it’s not the Champions League but it’s still a great competition.”
Liverpool will also have to deal with the dreaded Thursday-Sunday playing schedule, and have to travel to Southampton on the weekend. It is likely that manager Brendan Rodgers will have to rotate his squad to get through the two matches.
