An end-to-end opening to the tie saw Cesena take a shock lead in the 17th minute – and unbelievably Andre Pirlo was at fault for the first goal. The 35-year-old was too casual in possession, and after having the ball taken off his feet by Defrel, the forward played Djuric in to make it 1-0 to the home-side.
The lead, however, wasn’t to last for long – just nine minutes later Pogba was given far too much time and space to deliver an excellent cross into the box – which was met by the head of Alvaro Morata, who eased past the Seahorse’s defence.
Just five minutes later the come-back was complete – Juventus came from behind to make it 2-1 after this time Morata turned provider with his delicate touch finding the on-rushing Claudio Marchisio.
The Old Lady was expected to take a control of the second-half – yet the Italian giants struggled to extend their lead, which was to bite back when Cesena got their shock equaliser.
Buffon had absolutely no chance with a half-volley from Brienza fired into the bottom corner with just twenty minutes to go.
Nonetheless, more shock followed when, after being awarded a penalty for handball and following a delay due to the protests of the Cesena boss, the nerves clearly got to Vidal as he sent his spot-kick wide of the target.
