Recent reports have linked United with a move for Pique, who attracted plenty of criticism for his under-par performances during the early part of the season. Louis van Gaal’s side are desperate for defensive reinforcements and had highlighted Pique as a possible summer signing.

The 28-year-old has gone down as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest transfer mistakes in recent years, after enjoying huge success with both club and country – including the World Cup, the European Championship title and two Champions League wins.

Pique, who was quoted by the Metro, said: “I can safely say that I plan to retire here at Barca. Whether that’s at the end of this season or six years from now. I won’t play for another club.”
