Reports in the Sun claim that United lead the race for the Dutch international, who played under Van Gaal at the 2014 World Cup. While the club’s fans will have to wait until next season to see Depay step foot on the Old Trafford turf, the deal is looking increasingly likely.
The 20-year-old, who has scored 16 goals in 22 games so far this season, has been described as the Dutch Cristiano Ronaldo, while sources close to the player have confirmed that the move is definitely going to happen.
United were quiet during the January transfer window after spending in excess of £150m rebuilding their side during the summer. They currently sit third in the Premier League table and are on track for reclaiming their place in the Champions League.
