Whilst the Blues were busy penning the final details of the German international’s £24.1 million move back to Germany, Goal.com report that Spurs made a last minute enquiry for his services.

Much to their surprise, Spurs were actually quoted a higher amount than Wolfsburg, with Chelsea demanding £30m to sanction a deal as they were reluctant to sell to their London rivals.

The increased asking price and Schurrle’s desire to return to his homeland quickly put paid to any potential deal, but it perhaps showed that Mauricio Pochettino was looking to seriously improve his forward line – despite the wonderful form of Harry Kane.

Kane remains Spurs’ only in-form striker, with Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor misfiring, and the north London outfit were close to letting the Togo international depart to complete a loan deal with West Ham.

However, with the Hammers unwilling to fulfil Daniel Levy’s demands to pay Adebayor’s £100,000 a week wages in full, that deal was also unable to be completed.
