The FA have opted to ‘fast-track’ the case and are due to deliver their verdict on Friday, with Costa’s leave to appeal running until Thursday afternoon.
Should he be hit with an expected three match ban then he would miss this weekend’s crunch clash with Man City and subsequent fixtures with Aston Villa and Everton.
Any ban will leave Mourinho having to turn to Didier Drogba and Loic Remy to fill in for the club’s top-scorer and neither player has been in sparkling form when called upon thus far this season.
