The Gunners are already close to signing Villarreal centre-back Gabriel Paulista, but it would seem that manager Arsene Wenger is not done there. Rugani is another centre-back to offer depth in defence.
The 20-year-old has made 20 appearances in Serie A this campaign, and not looked out of place in the Italian top flight. He has played so well that he has actually been called up to the Italy national team squad on the back of his performances.
It is unknown whether this means that Wenger thinks he is ready to go straight in to the first team at the North London club. More likely is that he will be behind Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, and potential new signing Paulista in the pecking order.
