Clarke told talkSPORT that:
“There was a stage when Chelsea thought they had him signed,”.
“At the time we thought it was a done deal. He decided to stay at Liverpool and obviously he’s had a fantastic career.”
Steven Gerrard has won almost every honour available to him – however the Premier League trophy is very much the one that got away from the Reds legend.
Coincidentally it was Chelsea who all but destroyed what was to be Gerrard’s last realistic chance at getting his hands on the trophy last season.
Nevertheless, given the Reds captain is an established Anfield hero – the former England international will have little regrets, if any, in cementing himself as one of the all-time-greats to ever grace Liverpool Football Club.
