With Wolfsburg in the hunt to secure Champions League football for next term, they had identified the World Cup winner as the ideal man to give their chances a massive boost.
However, the club had been perturbed by Chelsea’s £30m valuation.
Earlier this month the club had been tipped to make a move, but sporting director Klaus Allofs insisted: “There is nothing to it.”
Schurrle is said to be keen on a return to his native country, but is contracted at Stamford Bridge until 2018.
But with Borussia Dortmund now also interested, Wolfsburg could be set to rekindle their pursuit in order to beat Jurgen Klopp to the punch.
The Blues are also being tipped to offload outcast winger Mohammed Salah, and held a meeting with Serie A giants Roma on Monday to discuss a £1m loan switch with the view of a permanent £11m transfer in the summer.
One stumbling block in any potential deal, though, would see Mourinho require a replacement should either of the wide men be sold.
