Van Gaal has already insisted that any big signings the club make will likely come over the summer rather than during the January transfer window.

And while the club have admitted interest in the £80m-rated Bale, Van Gaal is said to be more interested in bolstering his defence first.

Hummels and Strootman have been long time targets for the Red Devils, though in recent weeks they have also been linked with moves for the likes of Southampton duo Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schniederlin and Everton right-back John Stones.

United have also ruled out using in form goalkeeper David de Gea as a makeweight in any attempt to sign Bale, having just offered him a lucrative new deal to stay at Old Trafford.
