The former Reds hero likened the situation to when Xabi Alonso went to Los Blancos from Liverpool while Carragher was at the club. The ex-defender feels that going to the Bernabeu can be a dream move for some Spanish players.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday show, he said: ‘When Real Madrid come in – no matter who you are – they can still take them. They done it with Cristiano Ronaldo here [at Old Trafford]. Unfortunately as he’s Spanish it may be that dream move for him one day. It was the same with Xabi Alonso at Liverpool.

“The worry for Louis van Gaal may be how close is De Gea to signing a new contract. That maybe in the back of his mind,” he added.

The goalkeeper is currently in contract negotiations with the Old Trafford based club, and with the talks dragging on rumours of a transfer have grown. If he were to go to the La Liga giants then he would be taking a similar path to former United man Cristiano Ronaldo.

The now pundit also believes that new signing Victor Valdes will be unhappy playing second fiddle to the 24-year-old. The former Barcelona stopper signed for the Red Devils last week after training with the side since the summer to get over a knee problem that he sustained during the last campaign.

“The start of next season Victor Valdes – due to his reputation and what he’s won playing at Barcelona – will want some game time,” he continued.”He may get that as we expect Manchester United to be in the Champions League. So he will have more games to play but I don’t see him ever overtaking De Gea.”
