The German World Cup winner has been heavily linked with a switch to the Premier League over the past couple of seasons, but has continued to remain loyal at Dortmund.
However, reports in Germany this week are suggesting that the big centre-back is seeking a route out of the club when the transfer window re-opens next month.
Hummels is said to be frustrated with the club’s precarious position near the bottom of the Bundesliga.
“We’ve managed pretty well at home in recent weeks, but not at all away. It’s pretty astonishing that we are so pathetic,” he said of Dortmund’s form this season.
Both Arsenal and United are in desperate need of some defensive reinforcement in January and could be prompted into action in the coming weeks.
Dortmund have placed a £47m on Hummels’ head, and won’t be intending to drop their asking price.
