The Red Devils are long-term admirers of the 28-year-old, who is valued at around £25m by the reigning Portuguese champions.
Perez has been in fine form for Benfica once again this season and has helped them rise to the top of the Primeira Liga once more with his performances.
Los Che are also keen on the Argentine and have sent scouts to watch the midfield ace in action, but the Spanish club have decided that they don’t have the funds to sign him.
This leaves the Red Devils in pole position to land Perez next summer, with manager Louis van Gaal making no secrets about his admiration for the South American.
Van Gaal also has his eye on AS Roma star Kevin Strootman and knows the 24-year-old well from their time spent working together with the Netherlands national team.
However, Strootman has only recently recovered from a cruciate ligament injury and the Dutch boss is not convinced yet that this won’t have effected the form of the former PSV Eindhoven man.
