Reports in the Metro claim that Robben, who has been linked with a switch to United in each of the last three transfer windows, has continued to be tracked by the Red Devils – who are still looking to improve their squad.
United spent over £150m in the summer transfer window, and even broke the British transfer record to sign Argentine winger Angel di Maria from Real Madrid. But club officials have promised to spend more as they seek a return to Champions League football.
Van Gaal signed Robben, 30, from Real Madrid when he was Bayern manager in 2009, and is pushing for another deal for the player this winter. Bayern are unlikely to want to sell one of their most crucial players, but could be tempted by a big offer.
The Old Trafford side sit third in the current Premier League table, with five consecutive wins lifting them to within eight points of leaders Chelsea, and five points of neighbours Manchester City.
