Van Gaal has apparently earmarked a £16m bid for the 28 year old Uruguayan but has been told it will take a fee of £28.5m to land the rock solid La Liga star.

At times Man United have been stretched for defensive options due to fitness and form issues and one can well see why van Gaal would be eyeing up a January solution though one wonders if the Premier League side would be willing to fork out such a massive sum for a player of Godin’s age?

The former Villarreal man is arguably in the best form of his career, with his efforts aiding Diego Simeone’s side to a domestic title triumph last term as well as a run to the Champions League final.

It’s worth noting that with Godin at the centre of his Vicente Calderon defence Atletico have conceded just 15 goals in 17 domestic and continental fixtures this season.

Louis van Gaal has earmarked moves for Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar or Borussia Dormtund star Mats Hummels as possible alternatives to the South American.
