Rodgers throws his weight behind under fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has moved in to defend his under fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet after the Belgian has endured a dreadful time of things between the Reds’ sticks this season, with Rodgers insisting that Mignolet is “working hard” to improve on the training ground after a succession of high profile mistakes this season.

Mignolet again looked shaky in the midweek round of Premier League fixtures despite his team eventually labouring to a 3-1 victory over rock bottom Leicester City, although the struggling Foxes had taken the lead and clearly looked to exploit Mignolet’s lack of confidence.

According to the Mail, however, Rodgers will stick with the Belgian and has told fans that he is putting in the extra work on the training ground that will be needed to iron out the mistakes from his game and ensure that his fine shot stopping ability is able to come to the fore:

“Simon Mignolet is working very hard on the training field to improve.”

Mignolet made a solid start to life as Liverpool goalkeeper after joining from Sunderland to replace Pepe Reina in the summer of 2013, but his form has gone downhill during the current calendar year and there have been calls from some fans to replace him with a more solid and experienced option.
