The London side drew with Sunderland on Saturday to stay top of the Premier League going in to December. The centre-back claims that this displays their improved mental strength this time round.

The 28-year-old has been in fine form at the heart of Jose Mourinho’s defence. Although it has been the Stamford Bridge outfit’s attack that has been gaining the plaudits, their defence has also been strong.

“I think we are a different side to last year, not just personnel, but mentally I think we are different. They made it a scrap, but we matched that and managed to play our football as well. When teams sit back and get back in that shape, it’s very tough. We saw that last year and this was no different,” he told reporters.

“But in these sorts of games, if you don’t get the breakthrough, it’s important we don’t lose the game, and it’s a point away from home.”

The match against the Black Cats was the first time this season that the Blues have been prevented from scoring.

Striker Diego Costa showed his frustration by kicking out at opposing player John O’Shea. He avoided punishment for the incident, but the yellow card that he received later on means that he will miss the next game against Tottenham Hotspur in mid-week.
