You can add a new name to the growing list of defenders linked to Man United…
Portuguese paper A Bola has suggested a new centre-back target for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, in the form of Southampton centre-back José Fonte.
The wiry centre-back is having another excellent season, and would be much cheaper than some of United’s other prospective targets.
Man United’s injury crisis in defence is reaching unprecedented levels, with Rafael, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Jonny Evans all in various stages of difficulty.
This has lead to van Gaal being forced to call up inexperienced youngsters like Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett. The youth team graduates have done well, but depth at the back is desperately needed, and Fonte could be the man to stop the gap without stunting the long-term growth of the impressive youngsters.

Portuguese defender Fonte, who received his first cap in the last international break, is a new target for Man United, who have been linked with players like Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar, Zenit’s Ezequiel Garay and Basque youngster Aymeric Laporte.
The defender has been at the heart of the Saints’ sensational defence this season, and Dejan Lovren’s torrid time at Liverpool is only making the Portguese international look better.
