Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has played down the recent rumours claiming that the club are readying a bid for Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, according to the Daily Star.

Despite Messi bagging a hat trick in the weekend’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla to become La Liga’s all time leading goalscorer, his future is still up in the air at the Nou Camp.
Messi has been at Barcelona since he was 13 but uncertainty stems from comments where he admits his future could lie elsewhere.
Earlier this week reports surfaced suggesting that City could make a move for the 27-year-old, but manager Manuel Pellegrini was quick to take a step back from the rumours.
“The rumours are only rumours,” he said.
“What he did was exceptional and there are few players that can reach his level. The record he has got reflects how important he is for Barcelona.”
City are one of the few clubs in the world that would not only be capable of first buying Messi, but paying for his salary, too.
