Van Gaal has managed Robben both at Bayern Munich and with the Dutch national side, the pair are understood to have formed a strong bond and remained close over the years.
The Dutch manager admitted that he visited the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, meeting with his compatriot ahead of the crunch Champions League clash.
“I am not here to see Bayern but Arjen Robben,” van Gaal said.
Robben has been heavily linked with a £40m move to United since van Gaal took over, but with the pacey winger currently playing for one of the top teams in the world, there seems little reason for him to leave.
He rubbished reports of a move when quizzed about the possibility of the Dutchman leaving Bayern Munich, reminding reporters that he had already played both in the Premier League and La Liga.
“I have been in England, I have been in Spain, so I don’t have that desire, but that is all to do with the club I am with now,” he said.
“I am 100 per cent convinced I will stay here for a very long time.”
