The 63-year-old has apparently told his club’s scouts to keep an eye on the Premier League’s highest scoring Englishman, with the plan of making a move for the striker in the summer.
Berahino has already announced that he may need to leave the Baggies to further his career.
“If [leaving] is what it comes to, yeah, it will have to be that,” he told reporters.
“But obviously I appreciate what West Brom have done for me and I am working each day to win the club as many games as I can. Right now I am focused on West Brom.”
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has already said that there was a low probability that there would be any signings in January. However, it was reportedly originally the Dutch manager’s plan to bring in defensive cover in the upcoming transfer window.
The Old Trafford’s side’s interest in the 21-year-old has apparently got nothing to do with the injury problems that have plagued current loanee Radamel Falcao. They may be a stumbling block in any permanent deal for the Colombian.
The 28-year-old should be in contention to return from the sidelines for the Red Devils’ match against Arsenal on Saturday. If he is fit he will be hoping to make an impact and get his team’s campaign back on track.
