The Dutch midfielder is desperate to rejoin his former international manager Louis van Gaal at United, and has asked his current club to come to an agreement with the Premier League side over a January switch.

Strootman was allegedly van Gaal’s top target this summer, but despite strong interest a deal was not completed.

Injury forced him out of the World Cup this summer, with the former PSV Eindhoven star sidelined since March.

The 24-year-old has finally returned to training however, prompting the Red Devils to reignite their interest.

United’s defence has been more of a problem than their midfield this season, but Strootman would add some steel, grit, and tough tackling in the middle of the park and do  lot to protect the back four.

If the player himself is desperate to force through a move, then Serie A side Roma might struggle to hold onto him.
