Ferdinand’s punishment – along with a £25,000 fine – is for using the insulting term “sket” in a social media conversation.

The ex-England defender is said to be seething about the ruling, though, citing it as a case of double standards after the FA took no action against former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay for sending and receiving racially abusive text messages.

Ferdinand joined the club on a free transfer last summer, but had been left on the bench for the side’s previous two games against Liverpool and Aston Villa.

It is thought that he will hang up his boots at the end of the campaign, but now looks to face a battle to get back in the side with Richard Dunne and Steven Caulker marshalling the back line.
