Lamela scored his third goal of the season to set Spurs on their way to a 2-0 victory and a place in the tournament’s quarter-finals.

However, before delighting his manager with the game’s opening goal, Lamela infuriated the former Southampton boss by delaying his half-time team talk.

Lamela started the game on the bench and then replaced the injured Aaron Lennon at the interval.

The 22-year-old ex Roma star was seemingly not expecting to be called on so soon. Upon finding out that he was to enter the action for the second half, he needed to take a trip to the loo, leaving his manager waiting.

“I got angry about him being late because I was focused,” Pochettino told The Independent. “When we arrived at the dressing room they knew about Lennon’s injury so I wanted Lamela on.

“After that he went to go to the toilet and we had to wait for him to come out.”

Lamela found the net within nine minutes of entering the action, finishing cooly inside the penalty area after playing a neat one-two with Roberto Soldado.

Harry Kane scored Tottenham’s second – his sixth goal in six games – to complete the win.

Spurs will host Newcastle United in the last eight.
