Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson has urged Reds manager Brendan Rodgers to sign Jermain Defoe in the January transfer window.

Liverpool have scored just 13 goals in nine Premier League outings this season.

Summer signings Rickie Lambert and Mario Balotelli, who were brought in to help fill the void left by Luis Suarez’s £75m move to Barcelona, have both struggled to find top form so far in their Anfield careers.

Defoe only signed for MLS outfit Toronto FC last January, but he could be persuaded to return to England, having lost his place in Roy Hodgson’s England team since moving to Canada.

Thompson reckons that, if Defoe becomes available, Liverpool should jump at the chance to bring him to Merseyside.

Defoe has over 100 Premier League goals to his name, having played for Spurs, West Ham United and Portsmouth in England’s top division.

The 32-year-old is Tottenham’s record goalscorer in European competitions, having netted 23 goals in 35 continental outings for Spurs.

To date, Defoe has been capped 55 times by England at senior international level, scoring 19 goals.

Thompson began his senior career at Liverpool in 1996, making 48 Premier League appearances before leaving to join Coventry in 2000.

He retired from football in 2007, after spells with Blackburn Rovers, Wigan Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Portsmouth.
