Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to make a move for Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in January should Mario Balotelli’s run of poor form continue.

Indeed the Anfield manager is also concerned about Daniel Sturridge’s ongoing injury concerns and feels that a move for experienced Dutch international Huntelaar would be a cost effective option to consider when the transfer window re-opens.

Liverpool have struggled to fill the void left by the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona with striking trio Sturridge, Balotelli and Rickie Lambert managing just one Premier League goal between them this season, and a move to Merseyside may tempt Huntelaar.

The 31 year old is out of contract in the summer and Liverpool believe an offer of £8m may be enough to persuade Schalke to sell in January to avoid the prospect of a free transfer exit next summer.

Arguably Huntelaar wasn’t afforded the chance to make an impact at either Real Madrid or AC Milan, given just a season at both the Bernabeu and the San Siro, though the lethal finisher has more than proven himself since moving to Germany in August 2010.

Huntelaar has racked up a healthy tally of 96 goals in 147 appearances for his Bundesliga side but may feel a move to the Premier League a tempting opportunity at this juncture of his career.
