The 15-year-old became the youngstest player ever to feature in the European Championships after coming on as a substitute in Norway’s 2-1 victory over Bulgaria.

The Stromsgodset midfielder’s metoric rise has led to several of Europe’s top clubs looking to sign him.

He has already visited both City’s and United’s training complexes, but it is thought he would prefer a move to Anfield because he and his father are both big Reds fans.

Although Brendan Rodgers is thought to be interested in signing the exciting youngster, it is unknown what the teenager would demand in terms of a wage and assurances over playing time.

Earlier this week Scandinavian football expert and scout Fabrizio Bertuzzi, said: “Odegaard is an interesting player in a highly respected team.

“He is a talented and creative midfielder but he has impressive maturity. He attacks down the left but can also play on the right or in the centre. I saw a similar maturity in Paul Pogba but he was 17 at the time, not 15.

“I am not surprised Barcelona are interested. He features a mix of both Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Despite being an adolescent he is almost a semi-god of football.”

The Merseysiders have started the season poorly and may look to sign reinforcements in January to ensure they finish in the top four of the Premier League table.
