The Saints have made a flying start to the Premier League season, and sit second in the table after the first six games, prompting Ward-Prowse to tell reporters that Koeman’s training methods are better than his predecessors.

Koeman’s side travel to White Hart Lane on Sunday, with Pochettino’s new charges sitting in eighth place in the table, five points behind the South Coast club.

The Dutchman has lost just one game in all competitions during the current campaign – away to Liverpool on the opening day. His success comes despite the summer departures of star players Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers.

“With the new manager, training is more about short, sharp work, which I think the players prefer,” said Ward-Prowse, who was quoted by the Daily Mail.

“I think you can see the differences in our performance. Pochettino likes to press a lot more and and we did a lot more extra running sessions late into the afternoon during his time at the club.”

The 19-year-old, who is currently sidelined with a fractured foot, added: “I know it’s early in the season but we’re showing signs we battle it out in the top half of the Premier League.”
