The Reds are considering replacing their current number one Simon Mignolet, who has not been at his best since joining the club from Sunderland last summer, with the team’s poor defensive record as much down to his lack of authority in the penalty area as it is the players in front of him.
Former Barcelona shot-stopper Victor Valdes has previously been linked as Brendan Rodgers’ main target in that position, with the experienced Spaniard available on a free since he left the Nou Camp at the end of his contract last season.
Still, the possibility of signing Hart on a cut-price deal would no doubt be tempting, with the England international proving to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League on his day, despite some up-and-down form in the last couple of years.
It may be his lack of consistency that is behind City’s slowness at renewing his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of next season.
“Anything about a new contract is news to me,” Hart recently revealed. “I’ve heard nothing. I’ve got a year, nearly two years, left on my deal. That is all I am aware of.”
