The Dutchman tried, without success, to sign the World Cup winner this summer, and is aware that his team is still short on defensive quality despite spending over £150m on new players since his appointment.
And according to the Daily Star, Van Gaal will demand that the club splash the cash again at the turn of the year, to land both Hummels and Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman.
United have started their campaign poorly under the former Netherlands manager, failing to win any of their first four games of the season: losing twice at the hands of Swansea City and League One MK Dons in the Capital One Cup.
The club responded by being extremely active in the closing stages of the summer window, breaking their club record transfer fee to sign Argentine winger Angel di Maria, while also recruiting Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao, both of whom are in line to make their debuts against Queen Park Rangers this afternoon.
