The Portuguese international has been linked with a sensational return to the Premier League next summer after reports of him becoming unsettled at the Bernabeu, though recent claims from a Spanish football insider may have put the speculation to bed for the time being.
Although it has been suggested that Ronaldo is unhappy with some of Madrid’s transfer business in recent times, as well as stating his love for Manchester and his openness to playing for his old club again some day, it is thought that he is still seen as far too important to let go.
Chelsea have also shown an interest in the 29-year-old, with his old boss Jose Mourinho understandably keen to work with him again, but a source close to the club has said that he believes Ronaldo will end up staying and possibly signing an improved contract.
Ronaldo currently earns less than the likes of Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao, both at United, and it could be that his desire to be the world’s best-paid player is sparking this transfer talk.
“This is all about money,” an insider said. “Cristiano considers himself to be one of the world’s greatest players and doesn’t want to be paid less than anyone else, no matter who they play for.
“But Madrid are in no mood to let him go and will almost certainly end up giving him whatever he wants. He’s too important for them to let go.”
