Chelsea are hoping to secure the shock signing of Cristiano Ronaldo…

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hoping that his relationship with World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo will convince him to move to the West London next summer, rather than rejoin Manchester United.

Rumours have now been circling for some time that the Portuguese star, currently with La Liga giants Real Madrid, could be available for transfer next summer – with a return to his former club a strong possibility.

However, the Daily Express believe that Chelsea will go head-to-head with United for the player’s signature, and have already set aside a £60m transfer kitty purely for the purpose of luring Ronaldo to Stamford Bridge.

Reports suggest that United boss Louis Van Gaal is ready to offer him a lucrative deal exceeding his current £290,000 weekly wage, but Mourinho has now thrown his hat into the ring after forming a close-bond with the 29-year-old during their time together in the Spanish capital.

The source adds that Madrid have moved on a number of stars including Xabi Alonso and Angel Di Maria this summer, and could reluctantly part ways with Ronaldo if the player pushes for a move, with some outlets naming Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus and Blues winger Eden Hazard as potential replacements.

Madrid certainly seem to be gearing up for a new era, having bought and sold strongly in the summer, following last season’s Champions League success. If Real do push forward with their interest in Hazard, that could be a key negotiating tool for Chelsea to bring Ronaldo to London, with the Blues unlikely to accept a straight-cash deal for one of their prize assets.
