Liverpool are closing on a deal that will see their summer spending exceed the £100m mark for the first time in their history…

The Reds are on the verge of signing Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno from Sevilla, and Estadio Deportivo reckon a deal will be completed before the end of this week.

The Spanish publication claimed a deal was practically done much earlier in the summer, but with the two clubs failing to agree a fee, the transfer was put on the back-burner, with Liverpool considering other targets such as Ben Davies and Ryan Bertrand.

With the two left-backs joining Tottenham and Southampton respectively though, the Reds have decided to go back in for the 22-year-old Spanish international, and sent out a transfer delegation to Seville to finalise terms on the prospective deal.

A mooted fee of around £16m is being widely reported, which following the £20m deal to bring Croat Dejan Lovren to Anfield, would mean the Reds have spent £36m on defenders already this transfer window.

Moreno prides himself on his offensive ability, with the youngster happy to consistently get forward up the left flank and overlap his winger. He’ll have to fight fellow Spaniard Jose Enrique for the starting berth next term though, the the 29-year-old returning to fitness this pre-season.
