Arsenal are in surprise talks to complete a £9m deal to sign Man United winger Nani following lengthy discussions between the player’s representatives and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

CaughtOffside understands that the Arsenal manager has a long standing interest in the 27 year old Portuguese international and is closing in on a deal to bring the Old Trafford attacker to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Wenger is keen to strengthen his options in the final third and has previously registered his interest in Nani during Sir Alex Ferguson’s spell in charge of Man United and is ready to welcome in the Man United wide-man with experienced German international Lukas Podolski looking likely to secure a summer move back to the Bundesliga.

Nani has struggled to retain a foot-hold in the Man United starting eleven in recent seasons, making just seven Premier League starts last term, and whilst a move away from the club is inevitable the former Sporting Lisbon is keen to remain in the Premier League having settled in the country over the course of his seven years in the country.

Man United signed Nani in a £25m deal in June 2007 and was initially very much in the shadow of national team colleague Cristiano Ronaldo.

The fleet footed flair player did find his feet following Ronaldo’s departure for Real Madrid and finished the 2010/11 season as one of the Premier League’s leading assist makers though it is thought that Ferguson’s decision to omit Nani from the starting eleven that faced Barcelona in the 2011 Champions League final at Wembley may have signaled the beginning of the end for his Man United career.

Arsenal will hope to persuade Man United sell to a direct rival and believe their £9m offer is sufficient to secure Nani’s signature.
