The Uruguayan, who was banned for eight games and fined £40,000 for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in late 2011, posed alongside teammate Philippe Coutinho with half-eaten bananas.
Several high-profile footballers have posted similar photos on social media after a Villareal fan threw a banana at Barcelona’s Dani Alves during the Catalans’ 3-2 win at El Madrigal last night.
The Brazilian has earned worldwide plaudits for eating the banana, rather than reacting angrily to the abuse.
