The England international’s future at Old Trafford has been in grave doubt for some time now, especially after rivals Chelsea attempted to lure the striker south to Stamford Bridge during the previous summer transfer window.
However, despite the west London club failing with a number of offers for Rooney, all of which were rejected out of hand by the Red Devils hierarchy, it was still expected that the Blues would return for the player at the end of this campaign.
And with the 28-year-old’s contract at the Theatre of Dreams set to run out in just 18 months’ time, the writing appeared to very much be on the wall as far as Rooney’s United career.
But it now seems as though Rooney has performed a dramatic U-turn and instead decided to remain in the north west for the rest of his career by agreeing to put pen to paper on a new lucrative four-year deal with the Premier League giants that will see the forward remain as the highest-paid player in the Premier League.
