It’s been a shock to the system for Tottenham fans. One minute, they were contemplating the possibility of Dimitar Berbatov sticking around and teaming up with Robbie Keane to form a deadly duo next season, now it appears that they could be playing with Darren Bent as the lone striker and Luka Modric in support.
Oh dear, surely Liverpool aren’t going to dampen Spurs supporters pre-season optimism by snaring the Irishman from White Hart Lane. It’s being reported today that Keane is, ahem, keen to join his boyhood club, although it is only the Daily Mirror so perhaps it’s not quite the done deal they’d have you believe!
But Benitez is prepared to be patient after Keane told friends he would love to join his boyhood club.
The Reds boss is willing to offer Peter Crouch as a makeweight in any deal plus £5million cash.
Spurs manager Juande Ramos, like Benitez, is strapped for cash this summer, and Liverpool hope his interest in Crouch could clinch the deal.
Yet another high-profile player to add to the group marked “I’d like to join a bigger club but my current club won’t let me, unless it’s for a huge fee”. Members include Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Barry and Alexander Hleb.
